Being from France, my family and I regularly make visits, but this time held special significance as it marked our inaugural journey to Alsace, situated in the eastern part of the country, specifically to immerse ourselves in the festive aura of its Christmas markets. After a delightful week celebrating Christmas with the family in Paris and its surroundings, we set our sights eastward towards Alsace. Our chosen home base for the upcoming week was the charming medieval town of Eguisheim, nestled to the south of Colmar and known as one of the most beautiful village in Alsace. Eguisheim unfolded before us with its narrow cobblestone streets, exuding an old-world charm heightened by the enchanting Christmas market and the festive glow of lights that adorned the town.

DAY 1: Colmar’s Festive Delights

The initial day of our trip led us to the renowned town of Colmar, celebrated for its historic landmarks, including traditional houses nestled in the old town and the picturesque district known as Little Venice.

The Christmas market added an extra layer of charm, and we couldn’t resist taking a spin on the big wheel, which provided a delightful view of the Colmar rooftops.

Don’t forget your vin chaud and other Christmas treats while you’re at it!!

DAY 2: Unveiling the Charms of Strasbourg- A Day in the Capital of Alsace.

Our journey then took us to the capital of Alsace, Strasbourg, boasting a beautiful old town and a majestic gothic cathedral. Starting at the 17th-century Vauban Dam, we crossed the canal through this covered bridge with options to go inside or above.

We then explored the Pont Couvert, featuring three towers from the 13th century, discovering tales from the past.

Although we missed the Christmas market, Strasbourg still amazed us. We strolled through the Grande Ile neighborhood, admiring traditional houses.

The highlight was the 15th-century Cathedrale Notre Dame, a Gothic masterpiece.

In our exploration of l’Alsace, we couldn’t pass up the chance to savor a local delight – the choucroute, a traditional dish that embodies the flavors of this charming region. The choucroute, a classic in these parts of France, is a delightful composition featuring sauerkraut, various meats, and spices.

With satisfied appetites, we turned our attention to another aspect of the region – its charming Christmas shop windows.

The streets of l’Alsace are adorned with quaint boutiques and enticing displays. Each shop window told a story, showcasing the artisanal craftsmanship and unique offerings that make this part of France a haven for those seeking one-of-a-kind treasures.

Strasbourg’s allure, history, and charm made it a must-see in Alsace.

DAY 3: A drive across borders

In our quest to make the most of our time in Alsace, we set up an exciting day of cross-border exploration, venturing into both Germany and Switzerland. The prospect of experiencing three countries in a single day added an exhilarating chapter to our travel tale.

Our ambitious itinerary included a scenic drive through Germany, allowing us to fulfill a desire to declare, “We’ve been to Germany!” before making a pitstop in Basel, Switzerland.

Basel, Switzerland, is a city pulsating with artistic energy and architectural wonders. Wandering through its streets, we stumbled upon captivating art displays that adorned the cityscape. Basel’s commitment to artistic expression was evident at every turn, adding a cultural dimension to our journey.

However, it wasn’t just the art that caught our attention. Basel surprised us with its unique house front doors, each telling a story of Swiss craftsmanship and individuality.

Three countries in a single day— an adventure that added a thrilling dimension to our travels.

DAY 4: Exploring Historic and Most Beautiful Villages in Alsace

Exploration extended to the most captivating villages around Colmar, each possessing its unique charm showcased through narrow streets and quaint houses. My personal fascination with doors and windows found ample satisfaction in the aesthetics of Bergheim, Ribeauville, Riquewihr, and Kaysersberg.

Bergheim: A Tapestry of Medieval Tales

Our first stop, Bergheim, unfolded like a living tapestry of medieval tales. Its narrow streets meandered through centuries-old architecture, each building standing as a testament to the rich history that permeates the air.

Doors and windows bore witness to the stories of those who once called Bergheim home.

Ribeauville: Echoes of the Past in Every Corner

Ribeauville, with its name echoing the river that flows nearby, charmed us with its well-preserved heritage. As we walked its cobbled streets, the architecture spoke of a town that has gracefully weathered the passage of time.

Hunawihr: A Tranquil little village

Our Alsace journey paused in Hunawihr, a tiny village radiating tranquility. We explored its charming church and wandered through vineyards, absorbing the simplicity and beauty of this brief yet serene stop.

Riquewihr: A Fairytale in Every Facade

Riquewihr, often referred to as a fairytale village, lived up to its reputation. Half-timbered houses adorned with vibrant window decorations created a picture-perfect scene.

The doors and windows of Riquewihr seemed to frame the stories of this magical place, where history and charm coexist in perfect harmony.

Kaysersberg: A Glimpse into Alsatian Grandeur

Our journey concluded in Kaysersberg, a village that offered a glimpse into Alsatian grandeur. Its streets lined with traditional houses stood as guardians of a rich cultural heritage. Windows decorations were simply epic in this village.

DAY 5: New Year’s Exploration in Eguisheim

After ringing in the New Year, our day unfolded with a deeper exploration of Eguisheim. A delightful hike through the adjacent vineyards became the highlight, culminating in the ascent to the Three Towers. This uphill trek, winding through forests and vineyards, served as a fitting exercise to kickstart the new year, blending outdoor adventure with the charm of Eguisheim.
