For our family’s inaugural backpacking adventure, we headed to Santa Cruz Channel Island National Park for a brief but unforgettable 2-night, 3-day trip. We had amazing wildlife encounters with birds, foxes, and a majestic Scorpio, and our journey ended with the excitement of dolphins guiding our boat back to the mainland. Come along as we share our memorable Santa Cruz Island expedition.
Day 1: Smooth Sailing to Santa Cruz Island: A Rainy Arrival, Scenic Hike, and Fox Encounters
Our journey commenced early as we departed from the LA area to Ventura Harbor, where our boat awaited departure at 9 am. Upon arrival, we seamlessly checked in for our boat and parked in the designated overnighter area. With gear in tow, we waited by the boat ramp, aided by helpful personnel, ensuring a smooth process.
Amidst the rain, we boarded the boat for a scenic ride to Scorpion anchorage, where we eagerly formed a line to unload. Afterward, we embarked on a 1.5-mile hike to the upper campground, braving intermittent drizzles. At our campsite, situated at the secluded end of the campground, we enjoyed privacy and essential amenities, including toilets and potable water.
As the weather cleared, we tackled the Cavern Point Loop Trail, offering breathtaking cliffside views and opportunities to observe a variety of birds. Returning to camp for dinner, we were greeted by curious foxes waiting for us to share a meal.
Day 2: Hiking Scorpion Canyon Loop – Discovering Santa Cruz Island Secrets
The day began with a surprising encounter—a scorpion perched on a nearby tree. We marveled at nature’s camouflage mastery before setting out for our hike.
Following breakfast, we embarked on the Scorpion Canyon Loop, navigating uphill terrain while sharing the trail with lots of foxes poop. The panoramic views along the way were nothing short of breathtaking. After looping downhill, we returned to camp for a relaxing evening, enjoying a hearty dinner and a sunset before winding down with a game of Uno.
Day 3: Packing Up and a Scenic Farewell
After dismantling our camp and securing our backpacks in a designated fox box at the harbor, we embarked on another scenic hike, savoring cliffside views along the North Bluff trail, leading us down Potato Harbor Road. Following lunch, we engaged in a lengthy Uno game while awaiting our boat’s arrival.
The loading process was remarkably efficient, and we were treated to a delightful surprise—a playful pod of dolphins escorting our boat back to Ventura Harbor. We couldn’t help but marvel at the boat company’s commitment to ensuring everyone had a chance to witness this spectacular sight.
Our journey concluded back at Ventura Harbor, as we made our way back home, cherishing the memories of our family adventure on Santa Cruz Island.
